Hindi is spoken and understood by majority of Indians.
English is also widely spoken and is still the official language of the judiciary.
Eighteen officially recognized languages fall into two major groups i.e. Indo-Aryan and Dravidian.
Most of the languages have their own script, which are used along with English.
Though Hindi is the predominant language in North, it bears little resemblance to the Dravadian languages in the South.
For most of the educated Indians, English is the first language.
It is very easy to travel across India with English but the knowledge of atleast one local language is surely an added advantage.
You will be amazed to see shopkeepers and vendors speaking fluent English with the tourists. Sometimes it is more entertaining to just listen to them conversing in English. |
